Chasing Too Many Ideas? Finding Wisdom and Focus on God's Path

Chasing Too Many Ideas? Finding Wisdom and Focus on God's Path

Apr 15, 2025

Just the other day, I was taking a walk—and that always seems to be the time when I have my best ideas. That morning, I was brainstorming a new way to sell our beef from the farm. I had all the ideas flowing: build a website, launch an email list, start a blog, write a cookbook. I got so excited, I messaged my best friend to share the plan.
She gently asked, “When will you have time to do all of this? Are you getting off track?”
Ouch. She burst my bubble a little, but I knew she was right.
I’m a visionary. I love dreaming and planning. But I often skip the part where I count the cost—the time, the energy, the distractions. And the truth is, I’m in a season of building my Christian Work-from-Home Mom coaching business. That’s my focus right now. And while I may revisit those other dreams someday, I need to stay on the path God has laid out for me today.
It’s so easy to get pulled in different directions, isn’t it? But Proverbs 4 gives us a powerful reminder: wisdom calls us to fix our eyes straight ahead. To stay focused. To walk in truth. In this chapter, we’re invited to treasure God’s wisdom like buried treasure—and I want to show you three gems I found in this passage that encouraged me deeply.

Treasure #1: Wisdom is Life-Giving (Proverbs 4:5–9)

Before we dive in, let’s define wisdom. Wisdom isn’t the same as knowledge. Wisdom is knowing how to live rightly. It’s the practical application of God’s truth in everyday life. It brings clarity and peace when the world feels noisy and chaotic.
Where do we find wisdom?

📖 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” – Proverbs 9:10

📖 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally…” – James 1:5

We don’t have to figure it all out on our own. God wants us to seek wisdom, and He promises to give it generously.
In Proverbs 4, we’re urged to go after wisdom like it’s our top priority:

📖 Proverbs 4:5 – “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.” 📖 Proverbs 4:7 – “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” 📖 Proverbs 4:8–9 – “Exalt her, and she shall promote thee… she shall give to thine head an ornament of grace.”

The lesson? Wisdom isn’t optional—it’s essential. It’s life-giving. It brings peace, stability, and honor. Don’t rush your season. Walk in wisdom. Treasure it.

Treasure #2: Be Teachable (Proverbs 4:1, 10, 20)

Another theme that shows up repeatedly in Proverbs 4 is the phrase “my son.” It’s the voice of a loving parent urging their child to listen:

📖 Proverbs 4:1 – “Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father…” 📖 Proverbs 4:10 – “Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings…” 📖 Proverbs 4:20 – “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear…”

This is an invitation to be teachable—to slow down, listen, and receive. As moms, we’re used to giving advice and direction. But are we also making space to hear from the Lord? Or from the wise people He’s placed in our lives?

The lesson? God uses voices around us to speak wisdom—His Word, His Spirit, even our mentors or our own children. We need to remain teachable and humble enough to receive it.

Treasure #3: Stay on the Path (Proverbs 4:11, 14, 18–19, 26–27)

This last treasure spoke to me so clearly. We are constantly faced with distractions. New ideas. Shiny opportunities. But wisdom says: Stay the course.

📖 Proverbs 4:11 – “I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.” 📖 Proverbs 4:14 – “Enter not into the path of the wicked…” 📖 Proverbs 4:18 – “But the path of the just is as the shining light…” 📖 Proverbs 4:26–27 – “Ponder the path of thy feet… Turn not to the right hand nor to the left.”

If we want to build something lasting—whether it’s our home, our business, or our ministry—we must stay focused. That means learning to say no. It means pondering the path of our feet and being intentional with our time.
This aligns perfectly with the Christian Work-from-Home Mom Roadmap:

  • Step 1: Find your uniqueness—don’t get distracted by what everyone else is doing.
  • Step 2: Follow the path for 90 days—stay consistent and don’t give up too soon.
  • Step 3: Foster financial freedom—stay focused so you can build sustainable income.
  • Step 4: Focus on faith and family—don’t let busyness crowd out your most important priorities.

The lesson? Staying on God’s path leads to peace, clarity, and purpose. Don’t let distractions pull you away from the assignment He’s given you.

Bonus Family Activity Read Proverbs 4:1 with your children: “Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father…” Ask them what it means to really listen to wise instruction. Share with them that you’re learning too—and that God teaches moms just like He teaches children.
